Peak versus longevity: how QB Scorecard builds career QOPI
Great careers are not just long, and great peaks are not automatically great careers. The All-Time page tries to preserve both ideas.
Start with the seasons, not the career totals
Career leaderboards can become volume leaderboards if they begin with accumulated yards and touchdowns. QB Scorecard instead scores the underlying seasons first. That keeps the quality of the individual years visible before longevity is added.
A quarterback with several elite seasons should carry those peaks into the career calculation. A quarterback with many average seasons should receive credit for durability without automatically passing a shorter career that was consistently stronger.
Tiny season samples are protected before careers are built
A four-game cameo can produce an extreme rate statistic simply because the sample is small. For career weighting, sub-200-opportunity seasons are pulled toward the 50-point reference in proportion to their opportunity count.
That adjustment happens at the season level. A legitimate two- or three-season performance average is not then dragged back toward 50 a second time. This distinction keeps short cameos from overpowering careers without flattening real multi-season stretches.
Longevity adds value with diminishing returns
Sustained strong and elite seasons add career value, but the bonus follows a diminishing-return curve. The first several established seasons provide more new information than the fifteenth or twentieth season. Long careers still continue to gain credit; there is no hard cap that declares additional excellence meaningless.
That structure is meant to recognize what longevity actually demonstrates: the ability to remain productive across changing teammates, coaches, opponents and physical wear. It is a separate achievement from peak performance, not a substitute for it.
Postseason résumé is deliberately secondary
Playoff starts, playoff wins and Super Bowl victories can matter to how a career is remembered. They also depend heavily on team quality and opportunity. QB Scorecard therefore adds only modest postseason and championship adjustments after the regular-season performance foundation is built.
The result is a career score that can acknowledge résumé without turning team championships into the dominant quarterback statistic.
