ABOUT QB SCORECARD

Quarterback analysis
with the assumptions visible.

QB Scorecard is an independent football analytics project built to make quarterback comparisons more transparent. Its core metric, QOPI — Quarterback Overall Performance Index — combines production, efficiency, ball security, contextual accuracy, starter results and clutch performance without pretending any single number can replace film study or football context.

Why QB Scorecard exists

Quarterback debates often mix very different questions: who produced the most offense, who was most efficient, who played best relative to his era, who sustained high-level performance the longest, and who succeeded in the postseason. QB Scorecard separates those questions into distinct views instead of forcing every comparison into one leaderboard.

Season Rankings compare quarterbacks inside a single season. Best Seasons uses a fixed historical reference to compare peaks across eras. All-Time builds a career score from season-level performance, sample protection and diminishing-return credit for sustained excellence. Current Season uses a wider short-sample calibration so one explosive week does not carry the same certainty as a full season.

What QOPI does — and does not — claim

QOPI is a standardized performance index centered around a reference level of 50. It rewards creating yards, touchdowns and first downs, doing so efficiently, avoiding turnovers, performing accurately relative to available context, and contributing in late-game situations. Starter win rate is included with limited weight because wins contain information but are not an individual quarterback statistic.

The score is not a scouting grade, a percentile or a claim that the quarterback ranked first is universally “better” than every quarterback below him. It is one repeatable model for organizing evidence. Scheme, supporting cast, injuries, era, defensive quality and many details that matter on film cannot be perfectly reduced to a public historical dataset.

Data, history and corrections

QB Scorecard uses public football data and documents where historical coverage becomes less precise. Modern seasons can use richer passing and play-by-play context; older seasons rely more heavily on comparable box-score information. Where a field cannot be supported historically, the model uses a documented estimate or neutral treatment rather than presenting unavailable information as measured fact.

Source coverage, estimation choices and known limitations are documented on the How It Works page. If a source discrepancy is discovered, the underlying record or methodology can be corrected and the affected rankings recomputed. The goal is a model that can be inspected and improved, not a black-box ranking that hides its assumptions.

Independence and editorial approach

QB Scorecard is not affiliated with the NFL, any NFL team, player, sportsbook or statistics provider. Rankings are generated from the published QOPI methodology rather than manually moved to fit a preferred player order. Changes to the model are intended to address a general measurement problem — such as small samples, era comparability or career longevity — rather than to force a specific quarterback into a target position.

The site is designed as an analytics reference: rankings are paired with filters, player profiles, component explanations and source notes so a reader can understand why a result looks the way it does and decide how much weight to give it.

Ongoing curation and maintenance

QB Scorecard is actively maintained as the NFL season progresses and as the historical model is refined. Current-season data is refreshed after game windows with a catch-up process for late-finalizing games, while model or presentation changes are reviewed against the same scoring principles used throughout the site.

Meaningful public changes are recorded on the Site + Model Updates page so visitors can see when comparison tools, data handling, methodology explanations or site structure changed and why.
